What to Expect at an Account Job Interview

If you are planning on working in the field of accounting, the time will come when you will have to go on an account job interview. Here's a few ideas of what to expect during your account job interview.

Unlike many job interviews, the account job interview will probably focus almost exclusively on your ability to prepare and read accounting documents and to provide financially related services to your employer. In order to meet the accounting criteria established by the federal government, it is imperative that you are proficient and a very detail oriented person. You will most likely be given a few scenarios of how to properly prepare income and expense statements and be asked to work through a couple of sample scenarios to test your abilities.

Many account job interviews will also involve determining if you are a team-oriented person or if you are more productive working on projects alone. Accounting departments in larger businesses usually have need of both personality types. However, if the open position calls for someone who works better alone and you are definitely a person who functions better as part of a team situation, both you and the employer may decide to end the interview early.

Reliability is another virtue that will receive a lot of emphasis during your account job interview. Recording data must be done on time and be accurate. That means you have to demonstrate that you are punctual and capable of completing tasks within the time frames allotted. These days, your technical savvy may also be a focus during your account job interview. Many organizations use off the shelf software accounting programs to keep track of the Payables and Receivables, payroll expenses and all other accounting matters. By being proficient with at least one major accounting software product, you greatly enhance your chances of being seen as someone who is able to learn and work with technology.

An account job interview does not have to be a chore. Prepare yourself and make sure you present relate your skills to the needs of your prospective employer and you have a good chance of securing the position you seek.
